A Journey Back to Simpler Times: Building the IKS Amar Model Kit

Nostalgia and Simplicity

Do you have an item from the past that brings you back to a time when life was just simpler? For me, that item is the IKS Amar 1:537 scale model kit from AMT. I got this kit when I was around 16 or 17 years old, and it has been a cherished possession ever since. The joy and excitement I felt back then, and still feel now, are indescribable.

The Thrill of Discovery

Back in the late ’80s, finding references for the Klingon Battlecruiser was an adventure in itself. There was no internet to quickly look up images or details. Instead, I spent hours at the library, flipping through books and magazines, soaking in every bit of information I could find. Each discovery was like finding a hidden treasure, and it made the process of building the model even more special.

Building Memories at the Kitchen Table

I remember spending countless hours at the kitchen table, meticulously assembling the IKS Amar. The kitchen table became my workshop, scattered with tiny parts, glue, and paint. Each piece I added brought the model closer to life, and with each step, my excitement grew. The detail of the kit was astounding, and I took great pride in making sure every part was perfectly placed.

The Coolest Thing Then and Now

At the time, I thought the IKS Amar model kit was the coolest thing ever, and I still do. The intricate details and the sense of accomplishment I felt upon completing it have stayed with me all these years. It’s more than just a model; it’s a tangible connection to a simpler, happier time in my life.

A Timeless Treasure

Even now, looking at the IKS Amar brings back a flood of happy memories. It’s a reminder of the joy of discovery, the satisfaction of building something with my own hands, and the simple pleasures of youth. This model kit is a timeless treasure that continues to bring me happiness and excitement, just as it did all those years ago.

A Glimpse into the Past

I hope you enjoy these photos, however 37 years late. They capture not just the model itself, but the essence of a time filled with joy, curiosity, and the simple pleasure of building something truly special.

Fast-forward 35 years later and I have these to share as well at Ay’Arr Inter-universal Shipyrads.

Enjoyed reading about and seeing your build!

It’s not always about the accuracy of an old kit or whether the build meets your current expectations; sometimes, its about the experience–the joy–of the build when we were in different places in our real world and modeling journeys.

I built this kit 30 or 40 years ago and still have the same warm feelings when I see the box at a swap meet and when I saw your pictures. I can think of several other builds from this time that give me a warm feeling that I wish I still had in my collection, but alas, they are gone these many years and houses and career changes later.

You’re lucky to have this model in your collection, and I feel lucky that you now that you shared it!

Thank you Steve. I totally agree with what you said regarding houses and career changes. Within the last 5 years I seem to have lost my Enterprise D that I had since with the Amar. I found it in a move, and it was destroyed, but fixable, then I went to go look for it only to find it missing. I wish I still had that one, along with others I built, my first being the Incredible Hulk Hauler at age 12.
