Millennium Falcon

Millennium Falcon

The Millennium Falcon is a fictional starship in the Star Wars franchise. It is an extensively modified CEC YT-1300 Corellian light freighter. Which has played a role in some of the greatest victories of the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. Despite her humble origins and shabby exterior, the ship is coveted by many for being the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. The ship has been owned by a succession of owners. Including Lando Calrissian and Han Solo, who have made special modifications. Most significantly, these mods boosted the freighter’s speed, shielding, and firepower to impressive – and downright illegal – levels. The ship is beloved by her owners. Han Solo and Chewbacca spent years searching the galaxy for the ship they once called home, rejoicing when they finally reclaimed her in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Millennium Falcon in 1:350 Scale?

As I began constructing my 1:350 scale sea diorama, I decided to incorporate the Millennium Falcon into the scene. Why, may you ask? Because it’s a fun and creative way to add a touch of science fiction to an otherwise realistic setting. The diorama already features other types of ships such as Noah’s Ark, Kronos One, and the USS Constitution. In addition, by adding the Millenium Falcon, I was able to create a unique and imaginative display that blends reality with fantasy.

Info On The “Falcon” Model Kit

The Millennium Falcon 1:350 scale model kit from Bandai is a miniature replica of the iconic Millennium Falcon. However, it is a highly detailed and accurate model that features the five landing gear layout, the circular radar dish, and the quad laser cannons. The model kit comes with many marking stickers to customize the appearance of the ship, as well as a display base to showcase the finished product. Also, the model kit is made of plastic and requires no glue or paint to assemble. It is suitable for ages 15 and up and measures about 4 inches tall when completed.

The Journey

I set out to search for a 1:350 scale model of that famous ship and found that Bandai was the only manufacturer offering it in that size. The kit was very easy to assemble, although I can’t recall exactly how long it took me to put it together. However, painting the model was not much of a time-consuming process. The thing is only 4 inches long! Despite its smallness, I found the experience to be rewarding and enjoyable. Click on image to enlarge to see detail.

I decided to forgo the stickers (no decals came with the kit) and instead paint the small details on the ship. Again, I used my favorite Testors Enamels to paint this tiny vessel. I enjoyed the challenge of painting this, even though it strained my eyes. It reminded me of the Flemish painters from the 15th century, who created very small, detailed and intricate images using small brushes. Ensure you use your magnifiers when painting something very small.

The Finished Product

There was really nothing to this kit. It was a quick and pleasant build, something to take your mind off of a current built that’s giving you a problem. Click on image to enlarge to see detail.

I will be placing the Falcon right next to an F-14 Tomcat on the flight deck on an aircraft carrier I plan to build.

A comparison of the Falcon aboard the USS Independence LCS-2 (in progress at the time), and Kronos One Klingon Battlecruiser, also in 1:350 scale. Click on image to enlarge to see detail.
