The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a time of uncertainty and change for many of us. For me, it also brought an unexpected opportunity to reconnect with a long-lost passion: model building. This blog post is a nostalgic journey back to the fall of 2020, when I rediscovered the joy of constructing a 1:650 scale model of the Star Trek USS Enterprise, a hobby I hadn’t indulged in since 1988.

A Trip Down Memory Lane
In the fall of 2020, while browsing the aisles of Hobby Lobby in Lancaster, PA, I stumbled upon a model kit that instantly transported me back to my early teenage years. The sight of the USS Enterprise model kit brought a flood of fond memories from the days when I used to spend hours meticulously assembling and painting models. The familiar smell of paint and glue was like a time machine, taking me back to a simpler time.

The Hiatus
My journey with model building began in my early teens, but it came to an abrupt halt when I left home at 17 to join the US Navy. Life took me on a different path, and my model-building tools were packed away, gathering dust for decades. The responsibilities and adventures of adulthood left little room for hobbies, but the passion for model building never truly faded.

Rediscovery During the Pandemic
The pandemic, with its lockdowns and social distancing measures, provided a unique opportunity to revisit old hobbies. With more time at home, I decided to take the plunge and purchase the USS Enterprise model kit. As I opened the box, the excitement and anticipation were palpable. The process of sorting the pieces, reading the instructions, and planning the build brought back all the skills and techniques I had honed years ago.

The Building Process
Rebuilding the USS Enterprise was a therapeutic and rewarding experience. Each step of the process, from assembling the intricate parts to carefully painting the details, was a reminder of the patience and precision that model building requires. The satisfaction of seeing the model take shape was immense, and it felt like reconnecting with an old friend.

Finding Peace in a Time of Fear and Grief
During a time filled with fear and grief, model building provided a much-needed escape. The focus required for each step allowed me to momentarily set aside the worries of the world and find peace in the creative process. It was a meditative experience, offering a sense of control and accomplishment amidst the chaos. During this time, I was in shock to find out I had lost a friend due to the complications the pandemic brought, not necessarily the COVID-19 virus, but all the confusion and fear that this nation heavily succumbed to, brought about by the media.

Tips for Beginners
If you’re new to model building or considering picking it up, here are some tips to get you started:
- Start Simple: Choose a model kit that matches your skill level. Beginner kits are less complex and will help you build confidence. Try one of these for starters: a AMT 1/25 Scale 1997 Hot Wheels Dodge Viper GTS Snap Together Plastic Model Kit.
- Gather Your Tools: Basic tools include a hobby knife, tweezers, sandpaper, and glue. Having the right tools makes the process smoother.
- Read the Instructions: Take time to thoroughly read the instructions before starting. Understanding the steps will save you time and frustration.
- Take Your Time: Patience is key. Rushing can lead to mistakes. Enjoy the process and take breaks if needed.
- Practice Painting: If your model requires painting, practice on spare parts or scrap pieces first. Thin, even coats work best.
- Join a Community: Online forums and local hobby groups can provide support, tips, and inspiration. Try communities like JFFScaleModels at X, or if you live around the Lehigh Valley in PA this FB group.

Looking Ahead
Completing the USS Enterprise model reignited my passion for model building. It was a reminder that it’s never too late to revisit old hobbies and find joy in them once again. Now, I’m excited to take on new projects, including one for a future client. The skills and creativity that model building fosters are timeless, and I’m grateful for the chance to rediscover them.

In Conclusion
The experience of building the 1:650 scale model of the USS Enterprise during the COVID-19 pandemic was more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It was a reminder of the importance of hobbies and the joy they can bring, even in challenging times. Whether you’re a seasoned model builder or someone looking to pick up a new hobby, I encourage you to find something that brings you joy and dive into it wholeheartedly.
