A while back, I came across some insightful thoughts on the phenomenon of ‘modeler’s block’ and a ‘lack of modeling mojo.’ Basically, creative block for modelers. It’s something I’ve experienced myself, particularly when life gets in the way or a stubborn part on the model, and I find myself unable to pursue my hobby for days or even weeks.
During these periods, doubts inevitably creep in, and I begin to question whether I still have the passion for modeling. However, I’ve always managed to overcome these phases. At times, I find myself grappling with the question of why I engage in this activity when there’s no financial incentive. Yet, the vibrant modeler community never fails to reignite my enthusiasm. Witnessing the talent and dedication of fellow artists who pursue their passions serves as a powerful source of inspiration.
I believe it’s important to acknowledge and discuss these feelings. While it may seem like a ‘trivial thing,’ it holds significance for a considerable number of individuals. One effective strategy I’ve found is to always have an easy kit in reserve – something that I know will come together effortlessly, bring me joy during the build, and reignite that warm, happy feeling to get my head back in the game to the original kit I started on.
Not limited to modelers, creative block can be quite challenging, but there are several strategies you can try to overcome it.
Keys in Breaking Creative Block
- Acceptance: Recognize that creative block is a normal part of the creative process. There is nothing wrong with you, so don’t be giving up your love for your craft because you’re stuck at the moment.
- Take a Break: Sometimes stepping away from your work can provide fresh perspectives. Perhaps, starting an unrelated project to start “fresh” would give you new ideas for the one you took a break from. Ex: You’re working on a heavily detailed ship, and you just can’t get past a certain part that gives you issues, albeit take a break and get something different to work on, like a car.
- Seek Inspiration: Look for new ideas in art, nature, books, or music. Maybe do some research on the problem you’re having with that model.
- Change Your Environment: A new setting can stimulate creativity. Get outdoors, go fishing, take a book to read in the park.
- Keep Going: Persistence can often break through the block.
- Try New Techniques: Experiment with different mediums or styles.
- Collaborate: Sharing ideas with others can spark new thoughts. Go to your groups and communities online like I do.
- Set Constraints: Limitations can force you to think in new ways.
- Meditate or Exercise: These activities can clear your mind and reduce stress.
- Free Write or Doodle: Let your thoughts flow without judgment to unlock new ideas. I carry a small notepad and pen wherever I go just for that.
Remember, every creative person experiences this at some point, and it’s just a temporary phase. Keep experimenting with these methods until you find what works best for you. 🎨✨
