The Unthinkable Happened to Kronos One Before the Polar Lights Launch in 2023. Part 5

The unthinkable happened to Kronos One

…Then the Unthinkable Happened to Kronos One…

After finishing painting one part of the dorsal side of the ship, I set it aside on my desk to dry. Later, when I returned to my desk after painting the other half, I noticed a strong burning smell of plastic. Initially, I looked around my desk without realizing that the smell was coming directly from the dorsal side of the ship. Unfortunately, it turned out that the ship had caught fire. The unthinkable just happened to Kronos One!

I was devastated! But I knew I had to turn this around somehow. It was an unexpected setback. In old times I would’ve just taken the ship and have flown it into the wall! But in this case, pouring in so much time and love, I decided against it. I took assessment of the damage and made some calculations as to how big of a replacement it could be and then went to the next step. Suggestions were sought before the urge to destroy were set in motion. I went to Twitter/X for some counsel.

A Decision Was to be Made

I accidentally placed that piece too close to a lamp on my desk. To fix it, I asked the model making community on Twitter/X whether I should repair it or add a rock to it as if it was hit by a meteor. Unfortunately, I received mixed responses. So, I decided to rely on my expertise as a “Master Kit Builder” and repaired it myself.

I took a piece of flat polystyrene and replaced the damaged part with it then added more flat styrene of different thicknesses to mimic the plates on the wing. It looks good as new now after much filling and sanding! Then, as I normally do, I used the Tamiya 6mm and 10mm masking tape to mask off and then paint. Though this was a test of patience and perseverance, the result was what I expected but could be improved. In this paragraph the items I used I got from ModelCars.com.

The unthinkable that happened to Kronos One no longer exists.

Homemade Decal

After painting the main colors, I added the detail on the paint such as the gold plating and a custom-made decal from my computer: Chancellor Gorkon’s insignia. To further enhance the details, I used gel paint pens to draw in the intricate white and grey lines.

Help of 1:537 Scale

On how I figured the colors on this Kronos One, I used online images of the studio model. This is what is known as the old-fashioned way, eyeballing it and comparing it to the reference on file. Then I found a copy of the scale 1:537 Kronos One painting guide. Even with that, I still went with the studio model photos. Hours of mixing and looking around local shops for the elusive and sometimes expensive, Testors Model Masters enamel. There were all kinds of grey to work with. Neutral Grey, Camouflage Grey, Gunship Grey, and even Gun Metal. To bring out the pop, these colors contrasted with the light Grey and White along with the Red.

What helped me greatly to find colors and a match between manufactures was the use of paintRack! For instance, this app allowed me to track my paints with over 20,000 colors from top manufacturers like Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter, Testors, Model Masters, and more using the scan tool on my cell phone. I can also create custom paint sets for each of my models and even track paints I need with the wish list feature. In short, this I brought all elements together including adding the Star Trek Klingon K’t’inga Lighting Kit which I modified to include the nacelles. By the way, the lighting kit with the new box art already includes it.
